THE PIECE
Three stones run directly into each other, reading top to bottom as one continuous shape rather than three separate links. A pear-cut red opens the piece at the top, set point up instead of down, flanked by two small clear stones. Below it sits an oval blue, cool, deep, and the smallest stone of the three. The piece closes on a heart-cut pink at the base, point down, the largest and brightest stone in the set. Gold holds each one in a single plain band and nothing more. Traced from top to bottom, the silhouette widens, narrows, widens again, then tapers to a close.
THE DIRECTION IT PLAYS WITH
A stone set point down reads as a drop, something the eye falls straight off the end of. Set point up, it does the opposite, gathering inward instead of releasing outward. This piece uses both in the same breath. The red at the top pulls the eye up and in, the pink at the base lets it fall back out, and the blue between them sits still, doing neither. Nothing about the setting gets in the way of that tension. Each stone is held by a narrow band of gold worked flush to its edge, no prongs, nothing decorative layered on, so the only thing left to notice is which way each stone is pointing and why.
