THE PIECE

An emerald-cut red follows beneath it, deeper and more brick than bright. A cushion-cut green closes the piece at the base, corners softened, larger than either stone above it. Gold wraps each one in a single plain band and does nothing more. Then the earrings quietly break the rule: the same blue as the top stone, cut as a heart.
THE CRAFT
Blue, red and green in gold is a shortlist, not a palette, three tones chosen to hold their own next to each other with nothing to soften the transition between them. The setting does the rest of the work. A closed bezel like this, metal pressed around the girdle of a stone until it holds without a single prong, is one of the oldest ways to set a stone and one of the hardest to hide behind, since there's nothing decorative left to distract from it. The necklace keeps every shape geometric from top to bottom, oval to rectangle to cushion, nothing softer than a rounded corner. The heart on the ear is the one curve the piece allows itself, and it lands harder for being the only one.
